Two Basements

As a small boy my parents purchased a tract home in the suburbs. They saved everything to scrape up enough for a down payment. At the time there were only 4 of us in the family. My parents, my older brother and I lived in that two story house. Then my sister came along and my brother and I grew. We added a dog into the equation. Winters seemed to drag on in that ever shrinking house. Finally, my father decided to put a “Rec Room” in the basement. He decided he could do the work with “Help” from his sons. We spent evenings and weekends working on that basement. When the basement was completed, we had all that space to run and play. One evening my father surprised us with a ping pong table. That basement room represented a growing family with growing needs.

With a growing family at Harvest Bible we are Needing more space for ministry. We are starting the completion of the basement. This project reflects a growing church with growing needs. Every Sunday we cram our wonderful children into little classrooms in the education building. Amazing adults teach the powerful truths from the Bible and over time lives are shaped. Every Tuesday we use both buildings for AWANA teaching times. Wednesday nights we have Middle Schoolers learning in the unfinished basement. There are many other ministries using the building that could benefit from the basement being finished.

As we set out, I envision multiple goals for the basement: 1. Men and women grow together when working towards a common goal. My great desire is for the process of working together on the basement will grow us together. 2. When the basement is completed, children will grow and learn in the presence of godly men and women. 3. Finally, we will enjoy new ministries using the basement to “Help people become faithful followers of Jesus.”  The space will be ideal for meals, studies, seminars, community outreach and a host of other possibilities.

Already, I am impressed by the response to signing up to help. It seems that the whole body wants to participate in the project. I am reminded of the rebuilding of the wall in Nehemiah 6:16. They had accomplished the building of the wall in the record time of 52 days.

“And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.”

What a testimony to God’s goodness and protection in Nehemiah’s day. May we have the message of our loving God enhanced by our working together on a basement that will serve well this body for the future.
